I got to know the real Poland during my bike trips - it is in the Podlasie region, on the east. Wooden buildings, forked willows bending over muddy roads, roadside crosses and shrines, old ladies sitting with old men on the benches at the cottages or on crooked fences.
Western Poland, Recovered Territories, is still unfamiliar to me; it seems to be "less Polish". I must admit however, that during my recent geological practice in the Sudety Mountains I finally discovered the beauty of this land. It is enchanted in its emptiness, in the frames in which the prewar period is recorded. Broken-down towns and farms abandoned by the German refugees after World War II are the reason for coming back here to feel familiar with this region.
I have lived in the Mazovian region for many years and at the beginning I was influenced by the stereotypical opinion of Mazovia as a region of dull scenery - a province which should be passed quickly to get to more interesting places. My point of view has gradually changed during my bike trips. I have noticed that Mazovia could be or even should be a travel destination. To my surprise, I have recently found places worth photographing even in Warsaw - a city I do not like.
